This standard applies to lifts for persons and good with the exception of firefighters' lifts in firefighting operation. The standard offers guidance for planners, erectors, safety inspection organisations and authorities (such as the fire brigade) in ensuring the safety of persons by fitting lifts with a control system that will remove the lifts from the zone at risk or directs them to a safe stop in case of a fire. The distinction is made between critical and uncritical fire events from the point of view of building use, and prerequisites to the continued use of lifts after an initial fire alarm are given. Neither the evacuation of lifts and the rescue of persons nor evacuation and firefighters' lifts (see also VDI 3809 Part 2) are a subject of this standard.
