These guidelines and definitions have been developed to describe a group of by-products common to all aluminum melting operations. These by-products are commonly called "dross" or "skim" (or some derivative of these terms) and represent a significant number of dollars and metal units to the aluminum industry.
These drosses and skims are generated in various types of equipment, have different compositions (and values) and are handled or disposed of in a variety of ways. Each company or segment of the industry can use different terms to describe similar processes or materials. These drosses may be products of some operations and raw materials for others. Therefore, these guidelines are intended to first develop a method which will describe each type of "dross" in a precise way that is clear and understandable to everyone who has to deal with "dross". The guidelines will then define some recommended practices for handling, storage and transportation of dross.
These guidelines are distributed by The Aluminum Association. The guidelines are based on information believed to be reliable and are offered in good faith but without guarantee. The conditions which exist in individual plants vary width; thus, no uniformly applicable standards exist for handling scrap aluminum. Independent discretion and expert judgment should always be exercised. Accordingly, neither The Aluminum Association nor its member companies makes any warranty, express or implied, or assumes any responsibility or liability, whether based on warranty, contract negligence, strict liability, product liability or otherwise, with respect to the information and recommendations contained herein.
