This standard sets minimum requirements for shop- and field-applied, liquid-epoxy exterior coatings and interior linings used in the potable-water-supply industry for steel water pipelines installed underground or underwater, under normal construction conditions. The coating systems described are not intended for use on pipe that will be bent after the coating or lining system has been applied. Unless specified otherwise by the purchaser, the coating and lining systems mayconsist of any of the following three types: a two-part, chemically cured epoxy primer and one or more coats of a different two-part, chemically cured epoxy topcoat; two or more coats of the same two-part, chemically cured epoxy coating, in which case the first coat shall be considered as the prime coat; or, a single coat of a two-part, chemically cured epoxy coating. All AWWA steel pipe coating standards are based on the maximum service temperature of potable water. The purpose of this standard is to provide the minimum requirements for liquid-epoxy coating systems for the interior and exterior of steel water pipelines, including material, application, inspection, testing, handling, and packaging requirements.
