This Technical Specification identifies the standards needed to identify and label the Subject of Care (SoC) and the Individual Provider on objects such as wrist banks, identification tags or other, to enable automatic data capture using on data carriers in the care delivery process. It provides for a unique SoC identification that may be used for other purposes, such as recording the identity of the SoC in Electronic Health Records (EHR). Its intent is to be a reference for any organisation which plans to implement or improve Automatic Identification and Data Capture (AIDC) in their delivery of care process. The specification has been developed based on international standards widely used to identify medicinal products and medical devices. By combining this specification with these standards effective identification and traceability are enabled. This specification leverages the experience of industry and the research cited in academic publications. It proposes a good practice to reduce/avoid variation and workarounds which challenge the efficiency of AIDC at the point of care and compromise patient safety. This specification specifies how to manage identifiers in the AIDC process and completes the standards ISO TS 22220 (Health informatics – Identification of subjects of health care) and ISO TS 27527 (Health informatics – Provider).
