Stress Concentration Factors for Optimized Notches and Fillets in Flat Plate

ESDU 15006 considers the optimisation of the shapes of typical notches and fillets in structural component to significantly reduce the peak elastic stress at the notch or the fillet, as well as to increase the fatigue life of the component under a given set of loading and geometry conditions. Finite element analysis (FEA) is used to determine the lower stress concentrations for optimised notches on both sides of a finite plate under tensile loading compared the stress concentrations for comparable circular notches. Similarly, the FEA shows that optimised fillet shapes in flat plate under applied tensile stress and bending stress have lower stress concentrations than fillets with conventional geometry. It is also possible to obtain optimised notch and fillet shapes that have no stress concentration.
Two worked examples demonstrate how to use the data in ESDU 15006 to design an optimised notch and an optimised fillet. A further two examples illustrate the method of modifying the sharp corners of two optimised fillets for improved robustness under uniaxial loading.
