L'ISO 28540:2011 spécifie une méthode pour le dosage d'au moins 16 HAP sélectionnés présents dans l'eau potable et les eaux souterraines à des concentrations massiques supérieures à 0,005 µg/l et présents dans les eaux de surface à des concentrations massiques supérieures à 0,01 µg/l (pour chaque composé individuel).
L'ISO 28540:2011 peut être utilisée pour des échantillons contenant jusqu'à 150 mg/l de matières en suspension.
Sous réserve de quelques modifications, la présente méthode convient également pour l'analyse des eaux usées. Il est possible d'appliquer cette méthode à d'autres HAP, à condition que la méthode soit validée pour chaque cas.
