When in the 1950s, George Linnert collected the extensive documentation for the Interpretive Report, A Welding Type 347 Stainless Steel Piping and Tubing, (WRC Bulletin 421) the subject was one of the most talked about stainless steel alloys for welded construction. Problems encountered were then receiving considerable attention in academic and industrial laboratories. The authors of this report decided that this updated review should not be restricted to piping and tubing. Though Type 347 has lost favor in the past three decades, it continues to serve industry in high temperature and some unusually corrosive environments. Solutions to past weldability problems have been addressed in studies conducted in the past twenty years. It now appears that the stigma left from past weld cracking experiences should no longer mar its acceptance. Hopefully, this review will guide materials engineers to look with favor at the desirable properties of Type 347 and not be deterred from its selection by prior concerns about weldability. There remain challenging areas for future research which are discussed. Publication of this document – WRC Bulletin No. 421 was sponsored by the High Alloys Committee of the Welding Research Council, Inc.
