Full Description

This NACE/EFC standard is considered as the basis for the cleaning, surface preparation, and application of paint and coating systems to Navy ships used in marine environments for New Build, and during Life Cycle maintenance and permanent repair. It is intended for use by naval corrosion control personnel, coating applicators, and coating manufacturers. It covers coating materials, coating test protocol and acceptance criteria, surface preparation, coating application, quality assurance and control, and repair methods. Its purpose is to facilitate more effective corrosion protection of Navy ships and support inter-operability requirements by presenting reliable information and providing guidelines for coating manufacturers and shipyards to develop more durable specifications.

This standard replaces NATO Allied Engineering Publication (AEP) 59.

Full Description

Revised in 2020, this NACE International standard practice provides current technology and industry practices for the use of field-applied heat-shrinkable-sleeve coating systems. The standard is intended for use by corrosion control personnel, design engineers, project managers, purchasers, and construction engineers and managers. It is applicable to underground steel pipelines in the oil and gas gathering, distribution, and transmission industries.

The standard practice presents guidelines for establishing minimum requirements to ensure proper application and performance of field-applied, heat-shrinkable sleeves to the external surfaces of coated pipe. Included are methods for (1) qualifying and controlling the quality of a heat-shrinkable sleeve, (2) guidelines for proper application, and (3) inspection and repair techniques to ensure its long-term performance. The standard is applicable to coating systems used to prevent corrosion in conjunction with cathodic protection, and heat-shrinkable wraparound- or tubular-type sleeve coating systems, underground steel pipelines.

Full Description

Revised in 2018! This NACE International/SSPC joint standard practice covers the preparation of concrete surfaces before the application of protective coating or lining systems. The standard includes two updated tables, Table 1 details classes of surface preparation, and Table 2 provides minimum acceptance criteria for concrete surfaces before coatings are applied and relevant test methods.

The updated Appendix (nonmandatory) includes two additional tables, Table A1 provides typical surface properties of finished concrete, and Table A2 provides an extensive list of surface preparation methods for concrete surfaces. This standard should be used by specifiers, applicators, inspectors, and others who are responsible for defining a standard degree of cleanliness, strength, profile, and dryness of prepared concrete surfaces.

This Standard specifies abrasive blast-cleaning methods for the surface preparation of steel products before the application of paints or related products for the purpose of rust and corrosion prevention, and also specifies the basic matters relating to blastcleaning abrasive to be used, and the test and assessment methods of the surface to be treated.

NOTE: The International Standards corresponding to this Standard and the symbol of degree of correspondence are as follows.

ISO 8504-1: 2000 Preparation of steel substrates before application of paints and related products-Surface preparation methods-Part 1: General principles

ISO 8504-2: 2000 Preparation of steel substrates before application of paints and related products-Surface preparation methods-Part 2: Abrasive blast-cleaning (Overall evaluation: MOD)

In addition, symbols which denote the degree of correspondence in the contents between the relevant International Standards and JIS are IDT (identical), MOD (modified), and NEQ (not equivalent) according to ISO/lEC Guide 21-1.

WARNING

The machinery and substance used in abrasive blast-cleaning may be injurious to health of workers if inadequate precautions are taken.

In case of occurrence of any safety-related problems on workers during the abrasive blast-cleaning, especially concerning the air-blasting equipment with which the worker executes the abrasive blast-cleanning directly, any measures such as a safety device which automatically stops the equipment independently of the worker’s intention are required to be taken.

Attention is fully drawn to the daily checking of the body of pressure vessel, connecting joints, connecting hoses, connecting nozzles and regulating valves for flow rate of blast-cleaning abrasive, as well as their storage place in the case where they are not used for a long period of time.

Attention is also drawn to the dusts, scrapings and water contaminated with them generated by the abrasive blast-cleaning work for the safety and health of workers and the pollution of peripheral environment.

According to the above, appropriate preparation and control are necessary in the execution of the blast-cleaning.
