Scope<\/strong><\/p>\n

1.1<\/span> This test method covers the laboratory determination of apparent viscosity of engine oils and base stocks by cold cranking simulator (CCS) at temperatures between \u201310\u2009\u00b0C and \u201335\u2009\u00b0C at shear stresses of approximately 50\u2009000\u2009Pa to 100\u2009000\u2009Pa and shear rates of approximately 105<\/sup> to 104<\/sup> s\u20131<\/sup> for viscosities of approximately 900\u2009mPa\u00b7s to 25\u2009000 mPa\u00b7s. The range of an instrument is dependent on the instrument model and software version installed. Apparent Cranking Viscosity results by this method are related to engine-cranking characteristics of engine oils.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

1.2<\/span> A special procedure is provided for measurement of highly viscoelastic oils in manual instruments. See Appendix X2<\/span>.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

1.3<\/span> Procedures are provided for both manual and automated determination of the apparent viscosity of engine oils using the cold-cranking simulator.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

1.4<\/span> The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
