The paper focuses on gas<br \/>\nand\/or liquid fired boilers, and covers the design of the two predominant<br \/>\ncombustion control schemes (Parallel Positioning and Metering) and the<br \/>\napplicability of each. Also, it includes minimum recommended features for the<br \/>\nhardware required for a combustion controls application. The paper discusses<br \/>\nthe proper commissioning of a new combustion control application, and the<br \/>\nimportance of maintenance, operator training and adequate operator staffing.<br \/>\nAn example of the system design and commissioning cycle for a hypothetical<br \/>\nmetering control system is also offered.<\/p>\n<p>The specific goals of this guideline are to:<\/p>\n<li>Provide concerned parties with an understanding of the requirements for<br \/>\nsafe and reliable combustion controls so that they can be properly specified<br \/>\nfor new and retrofit applications.<\/li>\n<li>Provide concerned parties with an understanding that combustion controls<br \/>\nare a &#034;system&#034;. This system incorporates the control scheme (suitable for<br \/>\nthe requirements of the application), the actual controller, the final control<br \/>\nelements, the field measurement devices, the startup\/commissioning and the<br \/>\nsubsequent operation and maintenance.
