CSA Preface<\/strong><\/p>\n

Standards development within the Information Technology sector is harmonized with international standards development. Through the CSA Technical Committee on Information Technology (TCIT), Canadians serve as the SCC Mirror Committee (SMC) on ISO\/IEC Joint Technical Committee 1 on Information Technology (ISO\/IEC JTC1) for the Standards Council of Canada (SCC), the ISO member body for Canada and sponsor of the Canadian National Committee of the IEC. Also, as a member of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Canada participates in the International Telegraph and Telephone Consultative Committee (ITU-T).<\/p>\n

This Standard supersedes CSA ISO\/IEC 7816-4:15 (adopted ISO\/IEC 7816-4:2013). At the time of publication, ISO\/IEC 7816-4:2020 is available from ISO and IEC in English only. CSA Group will publish the French version when it becomes available from ISO and IEC.<\/p>\n

This Standard has been formally approved, without modification, by the Technical Committee and has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group.<\/p>\n

Scope<\/strong><\/p>\n

This document is intended to be used in any sector of activity. It specifies:<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u2014 contents of command-response pairs exchanged at the interface,<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u2014 means of retrieval of data elements and data objects in the card,<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u2014 structures and contents of historical bytes to describe operating characteristics of the card,<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u2014 structures for applications and data in the card, as seen at the interface when processing commands,<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u2014 access methods to files and data in the card,<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u2014 a security architecture defining access rights to files and data in the card,<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u2014 means and mechanisms for identifying and addressing applications in the card,<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u2014 methods for secure messaging,<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u2014 access methods to the algorithms processed by the card. It does not describe these algorithms.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

It does not cover the internal implementation within the card or the outside world.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This document is independent from the physical interface technology. It applies to cards accessed by one or more of the following methods: contacts, close coupling and radio frequency.
