Das WPR erfasst die Echos, die durch St\u00f6rungen des Radiobrechungsindexes erzeugt werden, mit einer Skala, die der H\u00e4lfte der Radarwellenl\u00e4nge entspricht (d. h. der Bragg-Skala). Der Mechanismus der Streuung von Radiowellen in klarer Luft wurde in den 1960er Jahren theoretisch und experimentell analysiert. Seit den 1970er Jahren wurden gro\u00dfformatige Doppler-Radare zur Beobachtung von Wind und Turbulenzen in der Mesosph\u00e4re, Stratosph\u00e4re und der Troposph\u00e4re (MST-Radare) entwickelt.
