The<br \/>\nfunction of the fiber systems considered in this document is to<br \/>\nrelay digital signals between defined digital interfaces via an<br \/>\noptical fiber link. The information presented applies to optical<br \/>\nfiber systems using multimode graded or step index fibers.<br \/>\nSingle-mode systems are under consideration and will be<br \/>\nincorporated in a future issue of this document. Bidirectional<br \/>\nsystems, in which both directions of transmission use a common<br \/>\noptical fiber, will also be considered in a future issue of this<br \/>\ndocument.<\/p>\n<p>As is evident from the title, the major purpose of this document<br \/>\nis to provide considerations and guidelines for users and suppliers<br \/>\nof optical fiber digital transmission systems. Consequently, terms<br \/>\nsuch as &#034;required&#034; and &#034;should be specified&#034; accompanying certain<br \/>\nparameters and items, are used in the context of emphasizing the<br \/>\nimportance of these parameters\/items to users and suppliers. The<br \/>\navailability of the data to satisfy system parameters, for the<br \/>\npurposes of this document, are considered negotiable between the<br \/>\nsupplier and the user.<\/p>\n<p>Certain examples are presented to clarify concepts and to<br \/>\nillustrate order of magnitude.
