It is<br \/>\nintended to assess the ability of an optical fiber to withstand<br \/>\ncyclic changes in temperature and humidity in the surrounding<br \/>\natmosphere. The performance of the fiber during and after cycling<br \/>\nmay be evaluated by performing specific optical tests.<\/p>\n<p>The specification of this procedure in conjunction with defined<br \/>\nfailure criteria presupposes that the failure criteria selected to<br \/>\nevaluate the property or properties being measured as a function of<br \/>\nthe cycling conditions and duration can be shown to relate to the<br \/>\nintended use of the optical fiber. At the time this document was<br \/>\nprepared, no proven model existed for the prediction of the<br \/>\nlifetime performance of fiber deployed in field applications using<br \/>\ndata generated through cyclic temperature and humidity testing.<\/p>\n<p>Optical fibers exposed to temperature and humidity cycling may<br \/>\nbe subject to many types of changes. The severity of the exposures<br \/>\nin time, temperature, and humidity determines the type and extent<br \/>\nof change. An optical property may not necessarily be degraded by<br \/>\nsuch cyclic exposure, but may remain unchanged or even improve. A<br \/>\ntypical indication of damage resulting from such cycling is an<br \/>\nexcessive temporary or permanent change in an optical property,<br \/>\nsuch as transmittance. The degree of change observed will depend on<br \/>\nthe specific property measured. Different properties may not change<br \/>\nat the same rate, and the rate and direction of change may not be<br \/>\nconstant over time, temperature, and humidity.<\/p>\n<p>The effects of exposure may be quite variable, especially when<br \/>\nspecimens are exposed for long time intervals. Reproducibility is<br \/>\naffected by the temperature and humidity control tolerances, the<br \/>\nduration of the exposure, and the aging characteristics of the<br \/>\nfiber coating(s), among other factors. Errors in exposure<br \/>\nconditions may have cumulative effects over time.<\/p>\n<p>This test is destructive; the fiber specimens are not expected<br \/>\nto remain usable after completion of the test.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Warning<\/strong>: Care should be taken when handling<br \/>\nsmall-diameter fiber to prevent it from puncturing the skin,<br \/>\nespecially in the eye area.
