This part was<br \/>\noriginally known as Part 407.<\/p>\n<p>This protocol is connectionless and is designed to operate in<br \/>\nclose conjunction with protocols providing connectionless mode<br \/>\nnetwork service, such as <i>Connectionless Network Protocol<br \/>\n(CLNP)<\/i> [ISO-8473] and <i>Internet Protocol (IP)<\/i><br \/>\n[RFC-791]. It is also designed to operate in conjunction with the<br \/>\n<i>Mobile Network Location Protocol<\/i> (Part 501) for providing<br \/>\nMobility Management services in the CDPD Network.<\/p>\n<p>This protocol provides configuration information about M-ESs to<br \/>\nMD-ISs. An MD-IS is informed of the Network Entity Identifiers<br \/>\n(NEIs) supported by each M-ES and the subnetwork point of<br \/>\nattachment (SNPA) address of the M-ES. That is, a serving MD-IS<br \/>\nobtains information that allows it to associate destination network<br \/>\naddresses to specific channel streams and to specific data link<br \/>\nconnections on the channel stream. Once the MD-IS obtains this<br \/>\ninformation, reachability information and routing metrics<br \/>\nconcerning these NEIs may be disseminated to other MD-IS for the<br \/>\npurpose of calculating routes to\/from each M-ES on the<br \/>\nsubnetwork.<\/p>\n<p>This protocol performs logically the same functions specified in<br \/>\n[ISO-9542]. However, the characteristics of the CDPD environment<br \/>\ninvalidate the operation of [ISO-9542] as follows:<\/p>\n<p>a. The Redirection subset of [ISO-9542] is invalidated by the<br \/>\nRadio Frequency (RF) subnetwork topology, which is a<br \/>\npoint-to-multipoint star subnetwork type. All data traffic<br \/>\noriginating from an M-ES is received by, and only by, a single<br \/>\nMD-IS controlling the subnetwork channel. There are no better paths<br \/>\nto use when forwarding Network Protocol Data Units (NPDUs) to their<br \/>\ndestination.<\/p>\n<p>b. Portions of the Configuration subset of [ISO-9542] are<br \/>\ninvalidated by the RF subnetwork topology and presence of a single<br \/>\nMD-IS on the subnetwork channel to which the M-ES is attached.<br \/>\nDirect M-ES to M-ES communication is not possible, nor can NPDUs be<br \/>\nrouted other than through the single MD-IS on the subnetwork.<\/p>\n<p>c.
