INTRODUCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n

General Description<\/strong><\/p>\n

This standard defines requirements for support of packet data
\ntransmission capability on TIA\/EIA\/IS-95-A wideband spread spectrum
\nsystems. Packet data transmission is supported on TIA\/EIA\/IS-95-A
\nand TSB74 Traffic Channels using primary or secondary traffic. For
\npacket data transmission using TIA\/EIA\/IS-95-A or TSB74 Traffic
\nChannels, the Radio Link Protocol specified in Chapter 3 of
\n"TIA\/EIA\/IS-99 and 2.2.2 is used.<\/p>\n

This standard specifies a packet data bearer service for
\ncommunication between terminal equipment and a packet interworking
\nfunction (IWF) via a base station\/mobile switching center (BS\/MSC).
\nIt provides procedures that can apply to multiple packet data
\nservices e.g.. CDPD and Mobile-IP.<\/p>\n

Service Option 7 is used to request packet data service through
\nan IWF supporting an Internet standard Point-to-Point Protocol
\n(PPP) interface to network layer protocols (see 4.1 and 4.2).
\nService Option 8 is used to request packet data service through an
\nIWF supporting CDPD data services over a PPP interface (see 4.3).
\nAdditional packet data service options may be defined in future
\nrevisions to select other types of IWF resources or services.<\/p>\n

Packet data service options provide a means of establishing and
\nmaintaining Traffic Channels for packet data service. When the
\nservice negotiation procedures of TSB74 are used, packet data
\nservice can be carried as primary or as secondary traffic. When the
\nservice option negotiation procedures of TIA\/EIA\/IS-95-A or TSB74
\nare used, packet data service can be carried as primary traffic
