PREFACE TO FATIGUE \u2013 ENDURANCE DATA SERIES<\/strong><\/p>\n

The design engineer concerned with aircraft and their equipment
\nfaces an ever-increasing demand for products with a performance
\nthat must be substantiated under stringent conditions of cost and
\nenvironment. Assuming the basic skill of the designer, no other
\nsingle factor can contribute more to the economic preparation of a
\nsatisfactory, competitive engineering design than having to hand
\ngood reliable design data.<\/p>\n

Data concerning fatigue of aerospace structures are widely
\nscattered and, when located, are of variable quality and relevance
\nto industrial applications. The task of collecting and evaluating
\nall the relevant data available on a particular aspect of aircraft
\nstructures is time-consuming and therefore expensive. Even if such
\na task is performed it is often found that the customer will wish
\nto view the design, not against some locally-derived data, but
\nagainst what can be demonstrated to be the best data that can be
\nascertained and that are vouched for by a significant cross-section
\nof the engineering and scientific community concerned with both the
\nderivation and application of data on fatigue. Accordingly, the
\nFatigue Series has been prepared to meet design requirements with
\nregard to fatigue of aircraft structures for both the designer and
\nhis customer and, by serving the needs of many, accomplishes the
\ntask at much lower cost and with higher reliability than could the
\nindividual.<\/p>\n

A qualified staff, with the assistance of many establishments
\nthroughout the world in research, industry and academia, collects
\nand evaluates the existing data. The staff discards that which is
\nirrelevant or unreliable, correlating and distilling what remains
\ninto an authoritative working tool for engineering application.
\nThroughout, the work of the staff is guided and monitored by an
\nexpert group and ad hoc working parties.<\/p>\n

The rate of growth of knowledge of fatigue is rapid. It follows
\nthat while the most recent information on a given aspect of fatigue
\nmay have considerable value and usefulness it may be subject to
\nsome modification in the light of further experience. The Committee
\nhas decided that, rather than hold back information of this type,
\nit should be included in the Series in the form of Tentative Items.
\nSuch Data Items are distinguished by the inclusion of the word
\n'Tentative' in the title. Such distinction is not meant to imply
\nthat there is doubt as to the reliability of the basic data but
\nthat some qualification of the inferences that may be drawn from
\nthe results of applying the Item may be advisable. The nature of
\nthese qualifications is noted in the text. All Items in the Series
\nare subject to frequent review and revision is made where
\nnecessary; Items that carry the designation of Tentative will be
\nrevised and the designation removed as soon as further knowledge
\nthat justifies such a course becomes available.<\/p>\n

Unlike many other forms of information, design data are
\nconstantly being generated and tested in practice. Therefore, ESDU
\ndraws its strength not only from the sources of new data but also
\nfrom those who apply the evaluated data that it provides.
\nAccordingly, users of the service are encouraged to regard ESDU as
\na widely-based group of people available to answer questions and
\ndiscuss the application of data in engineering.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
