Cruciform and cover plate<br \/>\nload carrying and non-load carrying joints are considered. The<br \/>\nfatigue strength of full penetration cruciform joints is<br \/>\nestablished and, using these curves as a base, the reduction in<br \/>\nfatigue strength due to inadequate weld leg length or penetration<br \/>\nis shown for all joint types. Also shown is the effect on failure<br \/>\nlocation of weld leg length and penetration. These data were all<br \/>\nfor zero mean stress; however, for two materials in each case, data<br \/>\nshow the effect of mean stress on fatigue strength of both load<br \/>\ncarrying cruciform and non-load carrying cover plate joints. In the<br \/>\nformer case, the effect of weld penetration is also considered on<br \/>\nboth fatigue strength and location of failure.
