While FOTP-54 can be used to<br \/>\nestablish overfilled launching conditions f\u00d3r the measurement of<br \/>\nvarious fiber parameters, it is principally used in conjunction<br \/>\nwith FOTP-30 or FOTP-5 1 for measuring information carrying<br \/>\ncapacity. Light launch conditions are established through the use<br \/>\nof a mode scrambler. The mode scrambler is positioned between the<br \/>\nlight source and test fiber to produce a radiation distribution<br \/>\noverfilling the test fiber core and numerical aperture,<br \/>\nirrespective of the spatial radiation properties of the light<br \/>\nsource.<\/p>\n<p>For many mode scrambler designs, however, the launching<br \/>\nconditions produced depend on the source\/mode scrambler alignment<br \/>\nand the interaction with any intermediary optics such as connectors<br \/>\nor optical imaging systems. If the source or any component in the<br \/>\noptical system is changed, the qualification tests must be<br \/>\nrepeated. When applied to information transmission capacity<br \/>\nmeasurements, the overfilled launch gives good measurement<br \/>\nreproducibility; it is not intended to necessarily give the best<br \/>\nbandwidth prediction for concatenated lengths.
